»There is no part of a butch lesbian that is welcome in this world,« iconically stated British poet Joelle Taylor, a spoken word and slam poetry performer, who just recently received a prestigious TS Eliot award for her collection C+nto & Othered Poems. She doesn’t hide the fact her book is based on personal experience, especially on the hatred she faced when coming out in the early 1980s, and while she talks about the violence against the LGBTIQ+ community in the past, she also reflects on the aggressive practices of today’s society, when harassment and exclusion are also part of an everyday experience on social media. With the collection being an homage to lesbian culture, including the disappearing lesbian club culture, Taylor points out the importance of friendship, solidarity and community. Her poetic performance will show what literature and arts can do to help, the microphone and the stage will, however, also be welcoming some local spoken word performers.
