LGBTIQ+ Youth Storytelling (2019–2020)

The project was carried out by a group of LGBTIQ+ young people as part of a European Solidarity Corps solidarity project. Through the storytelling project, the group wanted to develop their skills in storytelling methodology and learn strategies for creating safer spaces. At the same time, young LGBTIQ+ people with experiences of peer violence wanted to be empowered to address traumatic experiences and use their own experiences through storytelling. The project used storytelling as a method to raise awareness among the wider population, particularly young people, about peer violence based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Under the guidance of experienced mentors in the fields of storytelling, psychosocial support and peer violence, the group of young people took part in two training sessions: one focused on storytelling methodology and the other on creating safer spaces and supporting young people.

After completing the training in August 2019 in Rakov Škocjan, the project team organised a four-day storytelling training for young LGBTIQ+ people with experiences of peer violence. During the workshops, participants were introduced to storytelling, including alternative forms of storytelling, and used it as a tool to express their own experiences of peer violence based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity, as well as other experiences related to being LGBTIQ+.

The project resulted in the creation of a group of young LGBTIQ+ people trained to share their experiences of peer violence with young people in schools and youth centres across Slovenia. The project also produced video recordings of their stories, which serve as educational materials and tools for raising awareness about the issue.
