Overcoming the Culture of Hate Speech

This seminar will explore the situation of hate speech and other expressions of hate and intolerance. It will cover the legal definitions of hate speech and methods of tackling hate speech within and outside of the legal system, i.e.: good practices in civil society, especially in youth work, including the projects DecontRamination, Hate Speech Transformation in Youth Work, NiPrav, and others. We will present the findings of one of the very few studies on hate speech manifestations against LGBTIQ+ people in Slovenia that was conducted in 2018 by Roman Kuhar, Jasna Podreka, and Rok Smrdelj within the project, Call it Hate. We will also present a call for a more effective way of addressing hate speech.
