Are you noticing the use of words, jokes, and provocative comments that encourage hatred against certain groups of people?

Have you ever witnessed a conflict in the group that you didn’t know how to react to or that left you thinking you should have reacted differently?

Are you having trouble broaching certain difficult or taboo topics without the discussion getting out of hand and turning into reinforcing negative stereotypes about gay people, Roma people, feminists etc?

Young people in Slovenia report growing distress and negative consequences of different forms of violence they face from their peers. Hate speech is one of the most damaging tools of discrimination, especially since it’s hard to define and to recognize and even harder to address. Racist, xenophobic, homophobic and otherwise discriminatory ideas and opinions are not acceptable – but they are a part of our everyday life.

So how to grab hate speech by the horns?

Ljubljana Pride invites you to a one-day training for youth workers and everyone working with groups of young people, who recognize the presence of hate speech in their work as well as other behaviours that are violent and hateful towards marginalized and stigmatized groups.

The goals of the training:

• Participants will learn to differentiate between stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, hate speech and hate crime.
• Participants will learn to recognize hate speech and hateful behaviour, manage it and transform it.
• Participants will learn about the specific dynamics of hate speech based on homophobia and transphobia.
• Participants will learn concrete tools to use in their work.

The training will take place between 9am and 5pm in the space of Ljubljana Pride on Dunajska 10.
