First meeting:  07 and 08. 03. 2022

Time: Monday 18:00 – 20:00, Tuesday 16:00 – 17:00

“You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”

  •  Rosa Parks

“Civil disobedience becomes a sacred duty when the state becomes lawless and corrupt.”

  • Mahatma Gandhi

“We can’t save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change – and it has to start today.”

  • Greta Thunberg

From the Bus Boycott of Rosa Parks, the sit-ins of the Civil Rights movement in America, Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March, and most recent actions in the back lives matter movement and climate movement – civil disobedience has often played a crucial role in bending unjust and corrupt politics and society toward justice. What do these acts which we refer to as civil disobedience have in common? What distinguishes them from other forms of conscientious and political action? And how effective are they really?
Civil disobedience is commonly understood to be a public, non-violent breach of law intended to bring a change in law or current politics. (Rawls 1999, 320).
In these times, where the need is growing to set against unjustful, corrupt and destructive politics, we want to take the March to explore the topic of civil disobedience with all its facets.
The 8th of March is coming and so is Women’s* Day. The Event will be splitted in two parts – Tuesday the 8th of March we will go to the Women’s day protest. We will protest for women’s* rights at 16.00 at Kongresni square!
The second session, happening on the 22th of March at 18.00 at Dunajska 10, focuses on civil disobedience and its history, its theory of six distinctive elements, and your own experiences and questions.
To register send an email to wendla@ljubljanapride.org.
These events are primarily aimed at young LGBTIQ+ activists and our allies. They usually take place at Ljubljana Pride’s office, at Dunajska cesta 10 in Ljubljana. The space is wheelchair accessible. The events will be held in English due to English speaking facilitators. However, we can always help with translation and summing up in both languages, if you feel more comfortable expressing yourself in Slovene.
At the events, we will take into account all preventive measures to contain the epidemic, such as wearing masks, disinfecting and washing hands and maintaining mutual distance.
