It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t enjoy the occasional sprinkle (or outburst) of queer/activist drama in our communities – it keeps things interesting and the stories flowing. One can’t deny, however, that the conflicts we have and how we handle them are not always the most conducive to achieving our common goals or the most aligned with our (individual or collective) political values. Any close-knit community or group is bound to experience some turbulence occasionally, but when interpersonal disagreements and grievances get in the way of us doing our work, it is good to ask the question: why are we so mean to each other?
“Why Are Queer People So Mean To Each Other” is the title of an article by the Canadian trans writer and performer Kai Cheng Thom. In her writing, Thom reflects on how the (collective) trauma queer folks internalise through the sheer fact of existing in a fundamentally hostile world finds its way into our interactions within our communities. This can result in less than helpful ways of approaching conflict-resolution, instances of which can leave our communities deeply wounded and divided.
In the upcoming Pride Connects, we will take Thom’s writing as the starting point to look for resonances of this trauma-thinking in our own communities, and to try to start thinking about ways to do conflict differently. This way, we can learn how to build stronger communal ties and a sturdier movement for social change.
It is not necessary to read the text in advance to participate in the reading and discussion group; however, if you are curious, you can find it at the following link:
The event will take place in English.
