In October, we met with European MP Matjaž Nemec at the offices of the Pride Parade Association, where he was our guest for an event designed as a dialogue with young voters. The youth had the opportunity to ask questions and express their views on the key challenges we face as a community and society. The event was moderated by Sara Štiglic.
Nemec was a member of the LGBTIQ+ intergroup in the European Parliament until 2024, and this year a new intergroup is being formed, in which he will rejoin. This is an important step, as we need politicians who are willing to advocate for equal opportunities for all, regardless of sexual orientation or identity. “We are all different, but it is important that we all have equal conditions for self-realization,” he emphasized.
We also touched upon broader human rights issues. Nemec expressed deep concern about the current attacks on Gaza, as these are not only attacks on Palestinians but also attacks on the United Nations and the fundamental tenets of human rights. “We don’t know where these attacks will lead to,” he added. In Europe, which should be the cradle of liberalism and peaceful conflict resolution, he noted that right-wing ideologies are on the rise and increasingly permeating the mainstream. This is worry-inducing, as it involves the spread of ideas that directly threaten the freedoms for which we have long fought.
“The first step towards change is awareness of the current situation.” He warned that all rights can be taken away if we do not fight for them. “The power lies with the people. We must push now and not wait for the ‘right’ moment.”
The meeting demonstrated that we have allies in politics who care about the LGBTIQ+ community and broader human rights issues. Efforts like Nemec’s are crucial for us to continue fighting for freedom, equality, and justice for all!
